Community Camera Registry Program

Working Together to Keep Morris Safe

The Town of Morris, in partnership with the Morris RCMP Detachment, has established a voluntary and confidential Community Camera Registry Program.

The program helps RCMP quickly identify residents and businesses that may have security camera footage available when an incident occurs nearby.

Participation is completely voluntary. Registering your camera does not give the Town or RCMP access to your camera system or video recordings.

How Does the Community Camera Registry Work?

The process is simple:

1. Register Your Camera

Residents and businesses can voluntarily register their cameras with the Town of Morris.

The registry contains your contact information and street address. The Town does not receive access to your camera or recordings.

2. An Incident Occurs

If the RCMP are investigating an incident, they may contact the Town to determine whether any registered cameras are located within the area of the investigation.

This could include incidents such as:

  • Theft

  • Vandalism

  • Suspicious activity

  • Missing person investigations

  • Traffic incidents

  • Other criminal investigations

3. The Registry is Checked

Town Administration can check the registry to identify registered cameras within the general area where the incident occurred.

4. RCMP May Contact You

If your camera may have captured something relevant, an RCMP officer may contact you directly and ask whether you are willing to review or provide footage.

Providing footage is always your choice.

Your Privacy Comes First

The Community Camera Registry does not:

  • Give the Town access to your cameras

  • Give the RCMP live access to your cameras

  • Allow the Town or RCMP to monitor your property

  • Automatically collect or store video footage

  • Require you to provide footage

The registry is simply a tool that helps RCMP identify potential sources of video evidence more quickly.

Information submitted to the registry is kept confidential and is used only for the purposes of administering the Community Camera Registry and assisting RCMP.

Why Register?

Security camera footage can sometimes provide valuable information during an investigation.

By registering your camera, you can help:

  • RCMP locate possible video evidence more quickly

  • Reduce the time RCMP spend trying to identify cameras in an area

  • Support investigations occurring in your neighbourhood

  • Strengthen cooperation between residents, businesses, the Town and the RCMP

Registration does not mean your footage will automatically be requested every time an incident occurs.

Who Can Register?

The registry is open to anyone with an exterior security camera within the Town of Morris, including:

  • Homeowners

  • Tenants with authorized cameras

  • Businesses

  • Commercial and industrial properties

  • Community organizations

  • Institutions

Doorbell cameras and other exterior security cameras may also be registered.
