Meter Reads
The Town of Morris reads residential and commercial water meters to generate accurate quarterly utility bills. Your water usage drives your water and sewer charges, helping us keep services fair and reliable.
How Meter Reads Work
- Water meters are read every three months (quarterly) by Town staff or automated sensors.
- Your utility bill is based on your consumption during that quarter.
- We issue bills within four weeks of the meter read, with a due date clearly marked on the bill.
Why Regular Reads Matter
- Ensures you're billed only for what you use, with no guesswork or estimation.
- Helps you track usage patterns and identify possible leaks or unusual changes.
- Supports the Town's budgeting and planning for utility infrastructure.
What If You Can’t Read Your Meter?
If meter access is blocked (e.g., snow, plants, pets), please clear the area before read day so our team can safely record usage.
If you're away and can't grant access, notify the Town in advance via info@townofmorris.ca.
How to Read Your Own Meter
- Locate your water meter (usually in a basement, crawlspace, or utility closet).
- Note the odometer-style reading in gallons.
- Record the number before the decimal (Newer meters may require the use of a flashlight prior to displaying the numbers).
- Submit your reading through the online portal or on your utility slip — if available.
We may contact you for self-read submissions during high-consumption months or for billing adjustments.
Quarterly Billing Cycle
Bills are issued following these estimated cycles:
- Q1: Dec-Feb (Bill issued at the end of March)
- Q2: Apr-May (Bill issued at the end of June)
- Q3: Jul–Aug (Bill issued at the end of September)
- Q4: Sep-Nov (Bill issued at the end of November)
Each bill includes previous balance, current usage, total due, and payment options.
Want to Monitor Your Usage?
Looking to reduce water usage or spot a leak early? Consider these tools:
- Request a monthly consumption log from the Town to track your usage.
- Install a smart meter or meter monitor (if compatible with Town systems).
- Watch your bill week to week—unusual spikes often indicate leaks.
